I was so excited to see this movie that I almost exploded when I saw the trailers for the first time. I’m kidding! No, seriously…I almost exploded. As you are all aware, I am a huge Comics Nerd and even more so a sucker for anything Super-Hero or even one step further anything X-Men. My Girlfriend, Raina and I were talking the whole way to the theater about the movie and all the way back home about everything we were to experience and everything we did.
Without giving away the farm, here’s what I thought.
What’s it about? X-Men: Days of Future Past is set in the near future of 2023 when Mankind has almost been eliminated by giant robots called Sentinels. The X-Men themselves are all but extinct except for a select few such as Professor Xavier, Magneto & Wolverine and a few others. They must use the powers of Kitty Pryde to send Wolverine back in time to the year 1973 to stop a particular event from happening that creates the Sentinels.
Side Note: The Sentinels have the unique ability to adapt to any super power and this was all made possible by the DNA of Mystique.
What I liked! I loved how the writers were able to utilize so many of the plot points throughout the Marvel Universe of the X-Men series. There was a real terror I felt throughout the entire film as the dystopian-like society is presented in the beginning to the race against time. I loved almost everything about this movie and love the direction it is taking except for…(see below)
What didn’t I like? I didn’t like how they changed the character of Trask from an African American to small Caucasion man, the fact that Professor Xavier is alive and well in the future after being pretty much vaporized in the 3rd X-Men film and last but not least the non-explanation of how Wolverine’s Adamantium Claws are back to bone in 1973 after apparently being cut off in The Wolverine Movie. There’s a few more but I’ll let you find them, these were just the easy gripes.
What’s the Bottom Line? An Amazing movie from the story to the special effects. The changing of characters and the continuity issues although small did have an impact on me and make me wonder if Stan Lee even got to approve anything on this one since he is the Co-Creator of the X-Men.
See the movie, you’ll love it. If you’re a Die-Hard Marvel or X-Men fan then make your own conclusions but for me it was pretty darn amazing minus the bad stuff I didn’t like.
Top 3 Lines in the film:Professor X: Logan, I was a very different man. Lead me, guide me, be patient with me. Logan: Patience isn’t my strong suit.
Professor X: So many battles waged over the years… and yet, none like this. Are we destined to destroy each other, or can we change each other and unite? Is the future truly set?
Logan: What happened to the school? Hank McCoy: Are you a parent? Logan: I sure as hell hope not!
