I got off work early and was sitting in the worst possible traffic on the 5 North (for all you Californians, you know how bad it is) and I mean it was the worst. No one moved for at least 20 minutes. I had to be at the theater in 25 minutes. I called my Brother and asked him to grab me a ticket and I will meet him there. I had to really really use my knowledge of side streets to figure out the quickest way to the theater. I made it just in time for the previews. Oh, and I had run out of fuel for my car by the time I parked.
I really had no idea what this movie was about except from what I had heard that it was a time travel movie with 3 awesome actors; Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt & Bill Paxton.
What’s it about? Tom Cruise plays Major Cage in the Armed Forces that promotes the War to get more recruits involved, but when a General in the British Army says that he is being sent to the front lines to fight well, that’s when things take a strange turn. Major Cage doesn’t exactly make it to see the next day…he just repeats the same day over and over again. The enemy the world is fighting is more than a formidable foe, they pretty much wipe us out in the matter of a few days. Cage has to relive each day in order to get better and stronger to find a way to defeat the enemy.
What I liked! I kept hearing on the radio that this movie was Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers and I understood the Groundhog thing but really what other type of formula can one use when you make this kind of movie? Starship Troopers, nope…didn’t see that at all. All I saw was an awesome movie with a fantastic concept that is rarely ever used and it was just an incredible movie! Oh, and Bill Paxton was fantastic! I was waiting for him to scream out, “Game Over Man!!!”
What didn’t I like? There were a few small things with the story that didn’t make much sense but other than that it was pretty cool. It would have been funny to have Bill Murray somewhere in the film.
What’s the Bottom Line? See this movie! There’s not much else to say.
Top 3 Lines in the film:
Lt. Col. Bill Cage(Tom Cruise): “What I am about to tell you sounds crazy. But you have to listen to me. Your very lives depend on it. You see, this isn’t the first time.“
Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt): “Come find me when you wake up!“
Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt): “We should just reset.“
