The true telling of Captain Richard Phillips and his ordeal aboard the Maersk Alabama when it was attacked by Somali Pirates in 2009 was a scary event! Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi deliver solid performances in this fish out of water tale.

I waited on seeing Captain Phillips just based on the trailer. It looked stupid and there were many other better trailer out there for movies coming out at about the same time. I ended up finally watching it thinking, “This is going to be dumb, but I love Tom Hanks and the actual Captain Phillips ordeal was pretty scary on t.v.” So I went and when I came out of the theater it was a different story.
Captain Phillips is an actual dude! He was and still is the Captain aboard the Maersk Alabama, a shipping container vessel which is unarmed, and his boat was hijacked by Somali Pirates in the Indian Ocean back in 2009. As you can imagine, being taken over by pirates would extremely scary. Captain Phillips starts with Tom Hanks saying goodbye to his wife and hoping a flight to his ship. He is responsible for the safety of his men and the cargo they are transporting through the Gulf of Aden to Mombasa which is around the Horn of Africa. He starts a drill for his crew as if they were being attacked by Pirates.
Well, surprisingly their boat is attacked by some pirates and remember how I said earlier that the Alabama was “unarmed”? Yeah, that means no weapons except for a few flares and some water hoses. So Dumb! But this is how it went down. To make a long story short the Pirates get on board and take the ship, the crew of the Alabama stage a re-taking of the ship but the Pirates happen to take Captain Phillips hostage aboard a Life Boat. The rest you’ll have to check out but I can tell you that the drama and intensity is at a very setting.
There was some shaky cam, which you all know I can’t stand, but it wasn’t too bad. The directing and cinematography was okay but the music was Kick-Ass! The acting from Tom Hanks and Barkhad Abdi was just a real treat. And speaking of Barkhad Abdi, he has never really acted before this movie and now he’s up for an Oscar! It’s amazing really, but his acting in Captain Phillips is really good. If you want to see a good action flick that doesn’t require much thinking then check out Captain Phillips.
Best line in the film:
Captain Phillips (Tom Hanks): “Listen up, we have been boarded by armed pirates. If they find you, remember, you know this ship, they don’t. Stick together and we’ll be all right. Good luck.”
